    COPLAND, Aaron 1900-1990
    Title:
    A Modernist Defends Modern Music
    Description:
1 page. Octavo. Dated November 27, 1980. On personal letterhead, with "Aaron Copland 1538 L. Washington Street Peekskill, N.Y. 10566" embossed in red capitals at head.
Copland thanks Hinrichsen for his letter, in which his correspondent apparently intended to enclose a copy of an edited version of Copland's article entitled "A Modernist Defends Modern Music" but did not. Copland will be leaving for Europe the next day and will not be back until late December. "I trust this will not cause any inconvenience for you. I am returning a slightly edited version of the biographical note you mailed me."
    Together with:
A photocopy of the 9-page edited article.
Slightly browned; upper left corner of letter slightly creased and with small staple holes, not affecting text.
Copland is regarded as a quintessentially American composer, particularly noted for his compositions for ballet (Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo) and his Fanfare for the Common Man, evocative of the vastness of the American landscape and pioneer spirit of the country. His prolific textual writings include include works of musical criticism, observations on trends in modern music, commentary on his own works, and a 2-volume autobiography in collaboration with Vivian Perlis.
