Description
Barber,Samuel (1910-1981). Distinguished American Composer.
DOCUMENT SIGNED. A check as payment for the composition of his opera "Antony and Cleopatra" endorsed by Samuel Barber.
New York, March 29 1966. A 3-3/8 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide check from the Metropolitan Opera Association drawn on The Bank of New York. Dated March 29, 1966, the check made out to Samuel Barber is signed by two officers of the Met and endorsed by Samuel Barber on the verso,
signed "Samuel Barber / for deposit"
in black ink. The bank's cancellation stamps, on the recto and verso, are dated April 4, 1966. Near fine.
"Antony and Cleopatra"
was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera for the opening of their new home at Lincoln Center. It premiered amidst much controversy on September 16, 1966.

(1910-1981) was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music. A composer of opera, piano, orchestral and choral music, he is popularly known for his
