    Description

COMPOSER Giacomo Puccini autograph, signed vintage photo
Signed vintage sepia-toned studio photograph (by Rudolf Duhrkoop, Hamburg), shows Giacomo Puccini sitting close beside a middle-aged man in older style of dress, 6,5 x 8,75 inch - affixed to studio mounts: 10,5 x 12,75 inch, Torre del Lago, 5.03.1915, signed and inscribed (in Italian) by Puccini in dark ink to the lower photographer's mount "Remember Hamburg? Beautiful times! And also going to the wrong theater. Yours affectionately, G. Puccini - Torre del Lago 5-III-15", with browning, a few small scratches, and mild foxing - in fine condition. From 1913 to 1915 Puccini was frequently in Hamburg for promotion of his operas, despite the fact that Germany was at war. His popularity had soared after `Manon Lescaut` and `La Boheme`, and the royalties flowing from performances of his work on `La Rondine` and revision of `Il Tabarro` and would that summer add a very public stance against the spreading war to his already full plate.Provenance:The estate of J. D. McClatchy (1945-2018), American poet, librettist, literary critic, and former president of The American Academy of Arts and Letters.
