Autographed and inscribed 6.5" x 10" presentation style photograph of the Czech double bassist, conductor and composer, Prague, May 31, 1957.  Half tone photo mounted to heavy stock.
František Hertl (1906 - 1973) was a Czech solo double bassist , composer and conductor
Hertl studied bass at the Prague conservatory with František Cerny.  From 1929 to 1935 he played as the solo double bassist in Czech Philharmonic under Václav Talich, with whom  he also studied conducting. From 1933 to 1936 he studied composition with Otakar Šín and Jaroslav Řídký at the Prague Conservatory. From 1935 to 1950 he was a double bass player member of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Hertl worked from 1936 to 1950 as a double bass player and artistic director in the Czech Nonett, an important chamber music ensemble. In 1950 the bassist ended his career as an orchestral musician, turned to conducting work and founded in 1950 - 1951 the Prague Chamber Orchestra, where he was Artistic Director. In addition, he was Chief Conductor of the Brno Radio Orchestra from 1950 to 1961 and was also conductor of the Brno Variety Orchestra.
Hertl was also an internationally popular and outstanding educator and taught double bass from 1951 to 1973 at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts.  He also led classes in chamber music and conducting and from 1954 to 1961 at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts Brno.
