Autograph Letter
Autograph letter from Henriette, Duchess of Vendôme and Princess of Belgium, declaring her support for a project of the modern dance and lighting pioneer Loie Fuller. February 4, 1919. "I subscribe with pleasure the first name in this historical book created and compiled by Loïe Fuller for my peoples and I accept the sacred charge of being her intermedary [sic]." 1 p. of a bifolium with the Duchess' Cannes letterhead. Two small tape remnants and one corner crease; otherwise in very good condition. 6 x 8 inches (15 x 20 cm).
The American dancer Loie Fuller found great success in late-nineteenth-century Paris, appearing at the Folies Bergère and other celebrated venues. Attracting the attention of many artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Chéret, and Rodin, she was frequently painted and became an important figure of the Art Nouveau. She was also a pioneer of modern theatrical lighting, holding several patents for technologies that created colored stage lights. In later life, she worked extensively for First World War relief efforts. Correspondence on this subject between Fuller and Henriette, Duchess of Vendôme, is held in the New York Public Library's Fuller collection.
