    Description

The American composer writes a 15 bar musical quotation of "The Gambler Song" from his opera, "Hello Out There".  He rewrote the work as a stand alone song in 1953 for baritone and piano.
Beeson (1921-2010) best remembered for his operas,
was extremely well trained at the Eastman School of Music by the likes of Howard Hanson, Edward Royce, Burrill Phillips and Bernard Rogers.  He followed up his collegiate career studying privately with Bela Bartok.  He earned among other awards, a
    Fulbright
fellowship, a Guggenheim Grant and the Prix de Rome.  As the Chairman of the Music Department at Columbia University he expanded their offerings including a doctorate in music.  His best remembered compositions include the opera “Lizzie Borden”, “Hello Out There” and “The Sweet Bye and Bye”.  He also composed other smaller symphonic works, chamber and solo works for a variety of instrumental configurations and a rather vast number of songs.
