    Description

Autographed 6.5” x 10” presentation photograph of the great Czech violist, February 3, 1957.
Cerny (1891-1975) wass a violin pupil of Ferdinand Lachner and Jindrich Bastar at the Prague Conservatory from 1906-1912.  He was hired in 1916 as the Assistant Concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic.  He served in that position until 1918 and then accepted a position as the first desk violist of the Ljubljana Opera in 1919 with a Professorship at the cities conservatory.  In 1920 he founded the Zika Quartet with violinist Richard Zika, 2nd violinist Karel Sancin and cellist Ladlislav Zika.  They were highly successful and returned to Prague in 1921 renaming itself the Czechoslovak Quartet and in 1929 they further renamed themselves The Prague Quartet.  Cerny played with the ensemble for forty-six years, leaving when they disbanded in the 1950’s.  ‘he played solo recitals and concerts throughout Europe, Harold in Italy was a calling card and there is a wonderful performance with him on YouTube.  He also was the dedicatee of his friend and fellow violist, composer Paul Hindemith’s Viola Sonata number 1, op. 25. Numerous contemporary Czech composers dedicated works to him.
Cerny also taught viola at the Prague Conservatory.
