In the letter addressed to "Cher Madame,"  Bakst explains his plans, noting that he will be at the
Cosmopolitan Club on the 14th and will have expositions in Chicago
at the Art Club and Philadelphia in the coming months.

Leon Bakst was a Russian-born Jewish artist, costume and set designer. He was a member
of the Sergei Diaghilev circle and the Ballets Russes, for which he designed exotic, richly
colored set and costumes. To name a few: the set for
Scheherazade
(1910), the costumes
for the ballet
Cleopatra
(1909) and
The Firebird
(1910). In 1922 Bakst broke off relationship
with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes and traveled to the United States. He visited Baltimore
and specifically Evergreen House, residence of his friend and patron, art philanthropist Alice
Warder Garrett (1877-1952). At Evergreen House (now a historical museum of Johns Hopkins
University) Bakst re-designed several rooms. Mrs. Garrett organized several exhibitions and
traveling shows in the United States.
