Description
Autographed and inscribed postcard photograph as Lyubava Buslayevna in "Sadko" which she sang as the St. Petersburg premiere at the Mariinsky in January, 1901.Friede (1859-1942) studied with Fan-Ark and Iretskaya at the St. Petersburg Conservatory graduating in 1880. She then went to Vienna to study for a year with Mathilde Marchesi who was teaching in her last year at the Vienna Conservatory before moving to Paris. She then went to Paris and spent a year with tenor Gilbert Duprez. She made her stage debut in Florence in 1882, followed by performances in Barcelona and Vienna and then back to Florence. While In Florence she spent some additional time studying with the young composer and vocal professor Arturo Buzzi-Peccia. She returned to Russia in 1883 and made a tour of the provincial towns, followed by her concert debut in Moscow and St. Petersburg. She was appointed a soloist at the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg in 1884. The same year she also toured, singing in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon and spent time with baritone Giorgio Ronconi in Madrid. Her first stint at the Mariinsky she remained until 1891. During those years she also toured as a guest artist in Paris, 1888, Moscow, 1890. She left the Mariinsky for the first time in 1891 and spent two years at the Warsaw Opera. In 1894 she was hear at the Paris Opera, Nice and in Monte Carlo, returning as a soloist at the Mariinsky in 1895. She remained at the Mariinsky until 1903. She then married and did not return to the Mariinsky until 1914. The same year she became a nurse during World War I and remained in that role until the end of the War in 1918. From 1920 until her death she was a voice Professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
Friede sung some 59 roles in 53 operas from Azucena to Konchakovna and even Waltraute. She created numerous parts in both World, Mariinsky Theatre and Russian premieres. the World Premieres included: Adreino in Solovyov's opera "Cordelia" in 1885, Milovzor in Tchaikovsky's "Pikova Dama" in 1890 and Philip in Tanayev's "Cupid's Revenge" 1899.
